Thanks to innovations in building materials, greenhouses can be built using a variety of readily available materials such as wood, metal, and plastic. Centuries ago, building greenhouses were the domain of the rich since these structures were primarily built in large gardens. Today, one can purchase a portable greenhouse for less than a hundred dollars. Given the right location and conditions, anyone can have a greenhouse in their own backyard or garden. A wide variety of metal, plastic, and wooden greenhouses in kit form is available with fully customizable options.
Selection of the best among a large number of greenhouses for sale can be tricky for some, but not if you follow a basic set of time-tested rules:
- Always consider the option for expanding, especially if you have the space to spare. Go for a wide design with an option of lengthening it should the need arise.
- If you plan to grow plants from the ground up, opt for a design which features vertical fully glazed walls. This allows more sunlight to reach the plants.
- Consider the location where you will be placing the greenhouse. It should be safe from falling branches, protected from high winds, has good drainage, and should not be far from important utilities such as water and lighting.
- To ensure proper insulation, the frame should fit snugly, and the doorway should be high and wide enough for safety and accessibility. It should be wide enough to let a wheelbarrow pass through and high enough to let you in without bending or ducking.
- Doors for wooden structures should be firmly secured and open outwards. In the case of sliding doors, it should be designed to slide smoothly and keep draught out. This ensures that the internal temperature of the greenhouse will not be significantly compromised.
